Which boxing gloves are suitable for pad boxing?
First of all, the choice of boxing gloves in connection with pad training depends on the training progress, gender and body structure. For younger or smaller martial artists, it is advisable to use sparring gloves with a weight of 10 oz. This also applies to the women among you. Experienced martial artists usually use boxing gloves with a weight of 12-14 oz. Sparring gloves are used for pad training because they have a sewn-on thumb and thicker padding and therefore offer more protection.
What do you train with pads?
Boxing with a punching pad is very diverse and varied. As mentioned above, punch and kick combinations are possible. Pads are often used in sparring - i.e. fighting with modified agreements. Pad training makes you more dynamic and flexible and allows you to further optimize the skills you learned on the punching bag in terms of punching, kicking and attacking techniques . In addition, pad training enables you to improve your sense of distance as well as your accuracy and targeting , which is not least due to the target point. Because the martial artist is constantly on the move, endurance and precision are trained. The tactile and visual stimuli are also trained through martial arts training with the pad. In general, all muscle groups in the body are trained and strengthened. The leg muscles and abdominal muscles as well as the arm, shoulder and back muscles are used when boxing with pads. You can also train your defense with a punching pad. Your training partner will actively point the pads at you, so you have to defend yourself or avoid them. Advanced users can also practice knee strikes. This makes this training tool suitable not only for classic boxing, but also as kickboxing pads.
How do you hold pads correctly?
Usually, pad boxing involves one training partner holding the pads in their hands while the other partner places punches and kicks on them. Holding the pads correctly is extremely important to avoid injuries. You should make sure that the boxing pads are not too far away from the upper body and are never held straight. A slight incline is recommended here. The way you hold them varies depending on the punching or kicking practice. To ensure safe training and a smooth process, both training partners must concentrate and hold the pads stable.
Jab
In boxing, the jab is an abrupt punch with the leading hand. The leading hand is usually the weaker striking hand. When jabbing, the training partner holds the left pad next to the body at head height and receives the punch. The left shoulder should be turned slightly backwards in order to be able to protect oneself.
Cross
The stance for the cross is the same as for the jab. The difference is that it is mirrored and only the pad that receives the blow is held up with the right hand. This blow is therefore executed with the stronger striking hand (for left-handers it would be the other way around). Here too, a backwards turned shoulder is important.
1 and 2
A classic punch combination is “1 & 2”. In this punch sequence, you box first with your left fist and then with your right fist. The pads should be lowered slightly, held about 30 cm in front of your body and at chin height. In order to protect your head, it is important that your training partner holds the pads close together.
